What is Corporate Writing?

Corporate writing is a style of writing that is adopted throughout a particular company.  A good corporate identity will help to shape the company internally, but a corporate writing style will ensure that to communicate effectively with your clients, the communications used, methods and styles will all have the same type of structure.

Most corporate styles of writing are not broadcast, but they usually follow guidelines such as: easy to use language, a formal yet friendly style of writing, grammar that is correct and has been properly checked, spelling and punctuation that are also correct, concise writing and making sure that statements are both factual and easy to understand.

Combined, all these elements create a style of writing that everyone can understand and those writing it can also be clear about what they need to do.  Historically some people loved the opportunity to ‘show off’ their capabilities by writing very long sentences, littered with big words and technical jargon.  Yet this could often be confusing to the person who was reading it.

Thus adopting a corporate style, particularly if employees are writing English as a second language, can assist with ensuring that the company’s message is effectively conveyed.

Various online tools can assist with checking and fixing grammar, as well as making sure that spelling is correct, but with regard to the actual adoption of a corporate style, staff will be ultimately responsible for ensuring that it is adhered to and that it becomes successful.  But a good corporate style will help any company to flourish, so it is worth taking the time to encourage staff to adopt it.
